Meet Christopher: Making Everyday Opportunities More Accessible Through Heart of Variety

Every child deserves opportunities to discover the world, connect with others and participate in the activities they enjoy.

For Christopher and his family, making those opportunities accessible has required years of advocacy, specialized care and finding the right resources to support his individual needs.
Their story is one of determination, love and the importance of having a community that understands the challenges families can face when navigating disability-related services.
Getting to Know Christopher
Christopher was born with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency (PFFD), a condition that affects the development of his leg and creates a significant difference in leg length.
At just two weeks old, he was also diagnosed with Incontinentia Pigmenti, a rare genetic disorder that can affect the skin, eyes and other parts of the body.
As Christopher has grown, his family has navigated additional diagnoses, including autism and a visual impairment affecting his left eye.
He has participated in therapy since he was three months old, receiving physical, speech and occupational therapy to support his development.
Christopher uses an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device to communicate, and prosthetic equipment is another important part of his care.
Each of these resources plays a role in helping Christopher navigate the world in ways that work for him.
The Reality of Accessing Support
For families raising children with disabilities, accessing the right resources can involve significant financial and logistical challenges.
Christopher's family knows this firsthand.
His ongoing needs include specialized therapy, appointments with multiple specialists and prosthetic equipment that must be updated as he grows.
Although his family has financial stability, they have shared that much of their available resources goes toward meeting his care and equipment needs.

They have also experienced the frustration of being denied state assistance because of household income, despite the substantial ongoing costs associated with Christopher's disabilities.
Their experience reflects a challenge many families encounter: the resources children need aren't always accessible through traditional assistance programs or insurance coverage.
Why Heart of Variety Matters
Variety Texas believes children with disabilities deserve access to the tools and support that help them participate in everyday life.
Through the Heart of Variety grant program, we work to address gaps in resources by helping families access individualized support that traditional funding sources may not fully cover.
For families like Christopher's, community support can help make important activities and opportunities more accessible.
Christopher's parents have expressed deep appreciation for the people and organizations who recognize these needs and choose to help.
Their hope is not simply to navigate each challenge as it comes, but to continue advocating for a future where Christopher has opportunities to participate, communicate and experience the world on his own terms.
A Family's Perspective
Christopher's family has been open about the emotional realities of their journey.
They describe moments of fear about navigating a world that isn't always built with their son's needs in mind. But they also speak about the joy Christopher brings to their lives and their commitment to ensuring he has access to the support he deserves.
Their perspective is an important reminder that no family's experience should be reduced to a diagnosis or a list of challenges.
Christopher is a child with his own ways of communicating, participating and experiencing the world. His family wants him to have the same opportunities for connection and enjoyment as any other child.
And that's a future worth investing in.
