Killeen, TX — March 19, 2026 — After more than 13 years of dedicated stewardship and investment, Variety - the Children’s Charity of Texas today announced the transition of Peaceable Kingdom Retreat Center to new leadership under “Peaceable Kingdom of Bell County”, ensuring the retreat center’s mission continues to serve families for generations to come.
This thoughtful transition honors the founding families whose vision created a sacred space in 1984 for respite and connection, while positioning both non-profit organizations for focused growth and long-term sustainability serving Texas children.
Two Organizations, Texas Strong
As both organizations look to the future, this transition allows Variety Texas to focus on financial assistance grants and programs that remove barriers and increase access for children with disabilities and their families across Texas.
The retreat center will continue operating without interruption, now under the stewardship of “Peaceable Kingdom of Bell County” whose mission closely aligns with the founding purpose of the property.
"We are excited to carry forward the legacy of Peaceable Kingdom and to preserve the meaning it holds for our community—both in its history and in its future" said Andy Bass, Board President of Peaceable Kingdom Retreat of Bell County.
Honoring the Founding Vision
The Peaceable Kingdom Retreat Center was established through the generosity and commitment of the Schreiner, Bowmer, Simmonds, and Neal families, and the Jim Bowmer Foundation. Their belief in the power of nature and connecting in the outdoors laid the foundation for what has become a cherished place for so many.
Since 2012, Variety - the Children’s Charity of Texas has invested over $11,600,000 in operational leadership, capital improvements, and high-quality programming to sustain and strengthen the Bell County retreat center. Variety Texas ensured the retreat center not only endured — but thrived despite challenges from severe weather and ongoing impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Variety Texas is proud to have served over 80,000 students, campers, and community members during our years stewarding Peaceable Kingdom. We are grateful to the Bass Family for their commitment to continuing this legacy,” said Brittany Baize, President & Executive Director of Variety – the Children’s Charity of Texas.
