Learning to ride brings freedom, confidence, and independence.

Volunteer to support Variety Texas iCan Shine Adaptive Bike Camp and you will help children and young adults with disabilities learn to ride a two-wheel bike — often in just 5 days.

What Is Adaptive Bike Camp?

At camp, riders get one-on-one help from trained staff and volunteers.

We use:

  • Special bikes and equipment

  • A step-by-step teaching method

  • A safe, indoor space and outdoor space

Each rider learns at their own pace.

By the end of the week, many riders can ride on their own.

Volunteer Expectations

You are helping someone learn to ride a two-wheel bicycle independently. You and another volunteer will support one young person with a disability learn to ride a bike during the same 75-minute session for 5 days (July 13 - 17th, 2026).  This high volunteer to rider ratio is part of our successful formula for increasing independence, confidence, and teaching over 80% of participants to ride a bike independently for the first time.

 Requirements for Volunteer Participation

(Volunteers must meet all of below criteria)

  • Minimum age - All volunteers must be age 14 and older as of July 13, 2026

  • Able to walk or jog alongside a bike for a 75-minute session with breaks

  • Commit to the same time slot for 5 daily 90-minute sessions (allows for arrival, daily volunteer updates and on-time session start for riders)

  • Able to attend camp all 5 days (Monday - Friday, July 13 - 17th)

  • Commit to attending an in-person volunteer orientation or virtual training (75 minutes total training)
