CAMP BLUEBONNET

WHEN IS CAMP

Camp Bluebonnet is on

June 10th-14th, 2024

WHO ARE WE

Over 35 years ago, a few families, along with some very dedicated nurses and CDEs decided to have a play date for kids who had Type I diabetes and their siblings. The goal was to show these kids that there are others who face similar challenges. The parents and caregivers were able to talk and visit with each other about the realities of living in a family affected by diabetes. Most importantly, the kids were safe and they had a good time.

After several years, a camp planning committee was formed and the play date evolved into a week long day camp called Camp Bluebonnet that was held at Reunion Ranch. In 2000, we were invited to move Camp Bluebonnet from Reunion Ranch to the beautiful 120 acre Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children.  We have been there ever since.

Camp Bluebonnet (CB) is a week-long day camp for kids with diabetes. We serve kids entering grades 1-12. Kids who have graduated but are not yet 18 can attend, and we love to have former campers (18+) serve as volunteers. We also accept siblings of diabetic campers to Camp Bluebonnet on a limited basis.

CB Saturday is a one-day camp for any child with diabetes who is too young to attend Camp Bluebonnet. We also welcome kids who may need a warmup day before they attend Camp Bluebonnet. Kids from infants to those entering 8th grade are eligible for CB Saturday.

HOW MUCH IS CAMP

Camp Bluebonnet is a weeklong day camp that is open to children who have diabetes and a limited number of siblings. The cost for a camper to attend the week long camp is $335 per camper.

Why is the cost of camp increasing?

As we prepare for our next camp year, we are adjusting our numbers to make sure we can continue holding this camp year after year. [According to ACA (American Camp Association), the average daily per-person fee for day camp among camps that primarily offer a non-medical based day camp (meaning, it makes up 50% or more of their programming without additional needs) is $278.49. In the last two years, camp tuitions have increased quite a bit. This, according to the ACA, is due in part to “significant cost inflation]. We do understand that this may make a change in your decision to sign up for camp - but PLEASE, don’t let the price stop you. We offer scholarships, so please look for more information below.
